May 13, 2020 Update from the Mayor

Today, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced 1,677 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois with 17,668 test specimens reported in the last 24 hours. Currently, IDPH has reported a total of 84,698 cases, including 3,792 deaths, in 99 counties in Illinois.  In the U.S., there have been more than 1.3 million cases recorded as the death toll topped 80,300 according to Johns Hopkins University on Monday.  Hickory Hills has 92 confirmed COVID cases and 2 deaths.

Lend a Hand To Walkers

A resident asked if I could mention that property owners should look as their bushes and tree limbs to assure that they do not impede the side walk.  With so many walkers and riders out there these days trimming back overhanging branches would  be most appreciated.

A resident also submitted the below.  I shortened it just a bit to fit the update, but timeless advice.

Remember to spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.
Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.
Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn’t cost a cent.
Remember, to say, ‘I love you’ to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.
Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.
Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.
And always remember, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by those moments that take our breath away.

Announcement from Catholic Church

The Bishops of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese and Dioceses in the State of Illinois announced the gradual re-opening of the Catholic churches across the State of Illinois today.  It is a unified plan to which all the Bishops have agreed.  It will  be coordinated with the Governor’s Restore Illinois Plan.

Here’s the link to Cardinal Cupich’s announcement of the Bishops’ Plan on the Archdiocese of Chicago’s website.

Double Rainbow All the Way

Last weekend Richard Vasquez, the double rainbow guy, passed away of natural causes.  Vasquez reached viral fame when he filmed and reacted with uncontrolled elation at seeing a double rainbow.
